The role of the Toastmaster forms an integral part of any occasion where there are likely to be a number of guests and organisation and timing is important.
A Professional Toastmaster is highly trained, not only in the etiquette of any occasion, but also in personal relationships and project management.
The Toastmaster is independent of the venue, but works with them to ensure that the Bride and Bridegroom, and indeed the entire wedding party, receive the attention needed by the occasion and to ensure that the whole reception runs smoothly.
Ideally, the decision to engage a Toastmaster should be taken early in the planning stages of a wedding reception. This is not only because a good Toastmaster is booked well in advance, but because he can be of so much help in the preparations. From speech writing, to how long it will take to welcome guests through the receiving line (if you're having one, that is). He also has a very good feeling for what works and what doesn’t work at a reception.
Some wedding venues provide a qualified Toastmaster as part of their service. Others hope that the Head Waiter or Banqueting Manager will perform this complex role whilst remaining in charge and control of all their other areas of responsbility, such as the restaurant, bar, other hotel guests etc.
In reality these main aspects of their roles will invariably take priority over the detail that is so important to the Bride and Bridegroom on their special day.
Many Bridegrooms choose to rely upon their Best Man to assume the role of organiser on the day – a role that few Best Men cherish nor have the experience to take on.
These days, many couples choose to have the speeches before the wedding breakfast so that everyone can relax and enjoy the meal, but imagine if the speeches overrun and the food is spoiled. Your wedding day is ruined and the hotel's reputation is damaged through no fault of their own.
Likewise, photographs can also take longer than expected, so having a Professional Toastmaster on hand to make sure that everything runs to time is an essential part of the day.
"Just a note to say a huge thankyou for being such a wonderful Toastmaster at our wedding in May 2011. You made the day run like clockwork and took all the stress away from us and our parents. So many of our guests commented on how much your presence added to the day as well as what a thoroughly nice man you are. Thank you for helping to make our day so special." Kathryn and Will 2011
Just another reason why every bride needs a Toastmaster!
It is always a good idea to meet up with your Toastmaster in person before the wedding and go through the running order of the day so that he knows exactly what you want.
It is important that nothing should happen at the reception that he does not know about beforehand, so if any detail changes, no matter how small, you must always let him know.
Likewise it is important that your Toastmaster knows whether you want to adhere to the formal etiquette of the wedding day or whether you value a more relaxed approach.
If you do not want the formality of the red tailcoat, but still want to benefit from the Toastmaster’s organisational skills, then ask him to attend in his dinner jacket or lounge suit.
Never intrusive, always on hand and there for you every step of the way.
